The Best Music Photos of 2013

Memphis garage rockers Ex-Cult ended their West Coast tour with a basement show in St. Louis, Missouri on June 29th, 2013. Locals Better Days, A Totally Gay Cop, and Cross Examination were also on the bill. (Bryan J. Sutter)
2013 ended up being the year that brought back my confidence as a photographer. After almost 3 years as the house photographer for one of the region’s leading small capacity venues it was tough finding my new identity as a music photographer in a St. Louis, the littlest big town in the country. Finding myself photographing bands like Ex-Cult in a southside basement one night (above) and a few weeks later shooting Crystal Castles from the stage at Lollapalooza was almost surreal to take in, and it made me realize that the work I had done at The Firebird prepared me in so many ways for these opportunities. Doubt always finds it way into any good time and I did wonder if I waited too long to push myself into what has become the next period of my photography. In the last 12 months I’ve shot a completely new portfolio, nursed some rude hangovers and had a song written about me. There’s still so much left on my bucket list but I’ve made a good dent.

2013 wasn’t just about painting with new colors, it was about naming them as well. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite photos from 2013.
