The Australian psychedelic indie pop force of nature known as Tame Impala lit up and smoothed out The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri on October 8, 2013. The five piece brought along a rather impressive light show to compliment their dreamy performance. (Bryan J. Sutter)

The Australian psychedelic indie pop group known as Tame Impala brought those good lights and good times The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri on October 8, 2013. I was there. With a camera. I took some photos.

Much like the Animal Collective show a few weeks later, Tame Impala offered a visual component to their performance at The Pageant that emphasized the spacey sway and spectacle that their music could evoke. This often means dim, moody washes contrasted with bright flourishes that always seem too short. It a dangerous game for a photographer, trying to line up your shutter speed and aperture to best match the changing situation all the while hope that your auto focus holds up its end of the bargain. It’s tough, and it’s a shame to reduce such lighting to black and white, but sometimes it has to be done.

Shot for Eleven Magazine.
